At Lyndon Green Junior School, we are committed to helping our children grow into confident and creative communicators, equipped with the essential skills to become lifelong learners. We believe that writing is more than just a skill—it is a way for children to share their ideas, tell their stories and engage with the world around them. Our approach ensures that every child develops the confidence and competence to express themselves effectively while fostering a lifelong passion for writing.
Our writing curriculum is carefully designed to inspire a love for writing while building a strong foundation in essential skills. Aligned with the National Curriculum, it also reflects the diverse needs of our pupils. Through a variety of writing styles and genres, such as imaginative storytelling and persuasive arguments, children develop a broad repertoire of skills and a deeper understanding of the writing process.
We use a text-based approach, integrating reading and writing. Whenever possible, the texts explored in reading lessons are also used in writing lessons, creating a cohesive and enriching learning experience. We further enhance this learning by making meaningful connections across the curriculum. For example, reading and writing activities are aligned with topics studied in subjects like history, geography and science. This integrated approach ensures that children’s writing is relevant and purposeful.
Key Focus Areas:
Our writing curriculum emphasises the following key areas:
Planning, Drafting, and Editing: children are taught the full writing process, from brainstorming ideas to polishing final drafts.
At LGJS, we follow the National Curriculum for reading and place a strong emphasis on fostering a lifelong love of books. Reading is central to everything we do, and we use a range of approaches to support and inspire our pupils. Children take part in the Accelerated Reader programme to support reading progress and comprehension, alongside daily class readers that often link to our writing topics to create rich, meaningful connections across the curriculum. Each day includes dedicated ERIC time (Everyone Reading In Class) to promote reading for pleasure. We also deliver whole-class comprehension sessions to develop key reading strategies and build understanding of a wide range of texts. Every classroom has its own reading area, and pupils enjoy regular time in our school library, which is a valued and well-used space. We actively celebrate reading across the school, recognising its vital role in your child's learning, language development, and imagination.
