At LGJS, we use Kapow Primary’s Relationship and Health Education (RHE) scheme to support the personal development and well-being of all our pupils. Kapow’s curriculum is designed specifically for primary-aged children and is fully aligned with the statutory guidance from the Department for Education.
We chose Kapow because it offers a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and inclusive programme that helps children to develop healthy relationships, understand their emotions, and learn how to keep themselves safe — both online and in the real world. The lessons are engaging, well-structured, and designed to build confidence and resilience in pupils as they grow.
Kapow’s approach supports our school values by:
Promoting respect, empathy, and kindness in relationships
Encouraging open and age-appropriate discussions about feelings, friendships, and boundaries
Helping children to understand the importance of physical and mental well-being
Preparing them for the changes they will experience as they grow older
We also offer parent meetings for Year 5 and Year 6 families during the summer term, ahead of lessons that explore the changes children will experience during puberty. These sessions provide an opportunity to view the lesson content, ask questions, and discuss how we approach these sensitive topics in an age-appropriate and respectful way.
Here are some of the common questions we have from parents at these meetings:
Can I withdraw my child from lessons on puberty?
'Changing adolescent body' is a statutory part of the health curriculum so parents do not have the option to withdraw their children from these lessons. But we will inform you when we will be teaching this part of the curriculum.
Why do boys need to watch the girls' puberty videos and vice versa?
To prepare our children for modern society, we want them to grow up as empathetic, kind individuals with an understanding of the challenges that we all face. As children grow up and experience these changes, we feel that having knowledge on both male and female perspectives is crucial to develop a tolerant, supportive environment.
Are materials used which represent mixed-sex families as well as same-sex and other family groups?
At LGJS, we believe that every child should feel seen, valued, and included in the learning environment. To support this, we carefully select a range of books and teaching materials that reflect the diverse families, backgrounds, and relationships within our school community and beyond. We recognise that many traditional children's books and resources do not always represent this diversity. That’s why we make a conscious effort to include texts that showcase a wide range of experiences, voices, and identities — while still using well-loved classics and popular stories too. It’s all about achieving a balanced and inclusive approach where every child can see themselves reflected in their learning.
If you would like to find out more or have any questions, we’re always happy to share the books and resources we use in our classrooms.
We believe that a strong, consistent RHE curriculum is key to equipping our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive, both now and in the future. Kapow enables us to deliver this with sensitivity, clarity, and care.
If you’d like more information about the topics covered or how we teach RHE, please get in touch with the school office.
